Two Formats, One Technology

Choose Your PDLC Glass Format

PDLC technology is available in two installation formats depending on whether you have existing glass or are specifying new glazing.

Self-Adhesive PDLC Film

Applied directly to your existing glass using a wet installation method — no glass replacement, no construction required.

Best for:

  • Retrofit projects on existing glass
  • Tenant improvements and renovations
  • Budget-conscious installations
  • Leased spaces (removable if needed)
  • Any flat glass surface

Key Features:

  • No glass replacement needed
  • Custom cut to your dimensions
  • 0.4mm total film thickness
  • Ships with transformer and hardware
  • Installed by DIY or professional

Laminated PDLC Glass Units

PDLC interlayer factory-bonded between two glass panes — delivered as a complete finished glass unit ready for glazing frame installation.

Best for:

  • New construction and new partitions
  • Architectural specifications requiring safety glass
  • High-clarity, premium installations
  • Curved or shaped glass applications
  • Structural glazing systems

Key Features:

  • Factory-sealed — no visible edge connections
  • Meets safety glazing standards
  • Higher visible light transmission
  • Compatible with IGU (insulating glass units)
  • Temperable versions available
Compatibility

Glass Types Compatible with PDLC Film

Self-adhesive PDLC film works on virtually any flat glass surface. Here's what's compatible.

Annealed (Float) Glass

Standard clear float glass — the most common glass type in offices, homes, and commercial buildings. Ideal substrate for PDLC film application.

Tempered / Safety Glass

Heat-treated safety glass used in high-traffic areas and building code-required locations. PDLC film adheres well to tempered glass surfaces.

Laminated Safety Glass

Glass with an existing PVB or SGP interlayer. PDLC film applies to the interior surface for retrofit privacy glass.

Low-E Glass

Energy-efficient glass with metallic oxide coating. Compatible with PDLC film on the non-coated interior surface (side 2 of standard glazing).

Insulating Glass Units (IGU)

Double or triple pane window units. PDLC film can be applied to the interior pane, or PDLC interlayer can be factory-incorporated into new IGU fabrication.

Wet Areas & Shower Glass

Frameless shower glass, steam room glass, and other high-humidity glass. PDLC film with sealed edges is rated for wet environment installation.

Construction

What's Inside PDLC Film?

PDLC film is a precision multi-layer assembly. From bottom to top, each layer serves a specific optical and electrical function:

1

Optical-Grade Adhesive Layer

Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) bonds the film to the glass surface without air gaps or optical distortion.

2

ITO-Coated PET Substrate (Bottom)

Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coating on polyester film creates the transparent conductive electrode layer.

3

PDLC Active Layer

The core: liquid crystal microdroplets suspended in a polymer matrix. This layer provides the switchable opacity effect.

4

ITO-Coated PET Substrate (Top)

Second conductive layer completes the electrical sandwich. Bus bars along both edges carry current across the full film area.

5

Protective Hard Coat

Scratch-resistant outer coating protects the film surface and allows standard glass cleaning products to be used safely.
